Kingsbridge and Salcombe 1's played Tavistock on a bright and breezy day at home. Based on the previous fixture between the two sides, KS knew that a win was out there for the taking. Other results in the league that day meant a win was also important for the teams chances of avoiding league relegation.
The match began with a bang - KS securing their first goal following a shot from Laura from the top of the D within the first minute. Spirits were as high as the tempo of their play. The defence were working well to pressure the Tavistock players on the ball which meant lots of turnovers were won. The attack were then making lots of promising drives forward ,giving lots of opportunities for shots on targets from the attacking lines.
The first half finished with the best chance of the half, an accurate ball into Helen, who pulled the strike wide by a couple of cm. The half time break saw KS take a positive regroup. They knew they had left lots of chances on the pitch and were keen to get back out there and prove their ability.
At the start of the second half a flurry of attacking penalty corners were the platform that Kingsbridge needed. One resulted in a goal, much to the joy of the players and supporters. This goal was frustratingly disallowed due to an obstruction from the attack.
Tavistock grew into the game and had adjusted their play. They were starting to link passes together and this resulted in them pulled a goal back, to tie the score at 1-1. Again, shortly after, the opposition attack made a strong break down the pitch, beating the defensive line and securing their second goal to lead 1-2.
KS knew it was now or never. The tempo of play remained high and the Cougars were working hard on and off the ball to create attacking options, but with no goals coming. With 4 minutes to go, a tactical decision from coach Nikki saw KS bring goalkeeper Ellie off and another field player on. The aim was to flood the attack and bring the score back.
Tavistock turned the ball over and broke through the defensive and a shot towards goal hit defender Nats leg on the goal line. This was spotted by the umpires and, after deliberation, a penalty flick was called. Nat remained in goal but the shot was skilfully pushed past her.
The full time whistle finalised a disappointing 1-3 loss for KS, despite their consistently excellent effort across the pitch. With one match to secure their position in the league for next season, it goes down to the wire in their final match of the season against Plymouth University next week. Man of the match votes went to Tess, Islay and Boots. But winning was Hannah after some fabulous defending. Thank you to Neil and Roger for umpiring and to the Creeks End for match teas.
